NOVEMBER 2010

November 14, 2010

On November 18 Rob Thompson, Executive Director of the Covenant with North Carolina’s Children will offer an overview of a two year review conducted by more than 100 participating organizations in NC. The report offers a road map to craft a budget that works for everyone. After the forty minute presentation there will be a Q and A session. While the League does not have a position on the recommendations in this report, it encourages an active communtiy dialogue on NC tax policiies. Join us at 8 am or 1 pm for this discussion at the Chamber of Commerce meeting room.

Public dialogue may be an old-fashioned notion but in the twenty-first cenury it has taken on new dimensions. In past years citizens may have met in coffehouses, community centers, even churches. Today groups may meet for public dialogue face to face, in large and small groups or some combination of face toface encounteres and electronic discussion and information sharing. The league supports all forms of public dialogue as the way to open discussion and share ideas. Citizens today probably have less time but more skills and inforation at their fingertips to make the discussions exciting. With the new tools available citizens are more proficient at sudyiing issues and giving recommendations and comment on local issues.

November 28, 2010

Citizens participate in public dialogue and discussion when they feel their efforts will be felt. Sometimes the outcome of public debate is to energize citizens to take action themselves and take a ledership role in commuity efforts. There are some cautions. Although there is plenty of information available citizens sometimes form opions with limited or incorrect information. In todays environment citizens sometimes approach issues with anger, unable to see the discussion as a way to help one another understand various points of view. That is way it is very important to chose words carefully when describing an issue, ensuring that allcitizens hear the issue described in an impartial manner. At the LWVUS website, www.lwv.org go to the League library to read, “Citizens building Community: The ABCs of Public Dialogue” for a discussion on opening coummunity dialogue.
