Each Presidential election brings us to a crossroads. The election of 2008 will be remembered for generations as an election defining a new era in American history. After such a defining election all citizens must return to the rights and responsibilities that ground us in our American heritage. We must focus on what unites us - what makes us all Americans We must pledge to take what we learned through the challenging electoral process and use it as a guide to making a new model of citizenship. That model should encompass the best of all we are and be constructive in helping us design a blueprint for working together for our future.

Elections come with remarkable regularity! The League believes that being prepared for every election is the responsibility of every citizen. The preparation for any election begins today. There are issues at every level of government to be studied. Each issue is complex and deserves more than a “sound bite” solution. Today more than ever, citizens have access to incredible amounts of information. The challenge is to determine validity of “the facts”. In a complex society, the selection of creative solutions will require work and participation from each one of us. Start soon to prepare for the next election…find out when and where and who it’s about ! The issues won’t wait for you.

Recently the Board of County Commissioners passed a Minimum Housing Code. This code sets minimum standards for very basic standards of housing, including running water, adequate and safe heating source, safe electrical power and basic sanitary conditions. The code will not apply to non-residential property. This will be a complaint driven ordinance. That means that someone, the renter or an observer most bring the suspected violations forward. Enforcement will be handled by the county Code Enforcement Services Department and enforcement will begin January, 2009. If this is a topic that interests you check the county website for a complete text of the ordinance.
