AUGUST 2010

August 1, 2010

Getting from here to there around our community and around the region has become more challenging as our population has grown. Transportation planning is always of interest to a community. Roads attract industry and jobs. Public transportation efforts assist citizens get to work or school. Bikeways and pedestrian walkways are important factors in an assessment of a community’s comprehensive approach to ‘Quality of Life’ issues. Bringing all methods of transportation into a planning process and working so that the plan is regional, connecting all of us with one another safely, is the responsibility of the French Broad River Municipal Planning Organization. Look over their website www.fbrmpo.org for current information on long range transportation planning. Hendeson County and its five municipalities are member governments of the regional MPO.

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day. This day celebrates the 90th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the amendment which gave U.S. women full voting rights. Just days after Tennessee became the thirty-sixth state to ratify the amendment, the Secretary of State signed the proclamation enacting the 19th Amendment. The first serious proposal that women be granted the right to vote came from a meeting of women in Seneca Falls, NY in 1848 under the leadership of Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was joined in 1851 by Susan B. Anthony. They joined forces and worked together over the next half century for women’s suffrage. They both died before their goal was reached, but lived long enough to see significant progress to the ultimate success of the 19th Amendment.

August 26 is Women’s Equality Day. This day celebrates the 90th Anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the amendment which gave U.S. women full voting rights. This is a time to review the sacrifices made by the amazing women who worked for passage of the 19th Amendment. They were public advocates for this issue at a time in our history when these were unconventional roles for women. They were pariahs whose activity was viewed as unacceptable and inappropriate. It is impossible to conceive how difficult their lives were, what hardships they endured - public humiliation, incarceration, ridicule - so that women from that time on could exercise their right to vote. Without reminders of their history many of us would never know what they endured for all women now and into the future.

Come to the Apple Festival and visit the booth of the League of Women Voters of Henderson County. League members will be at the booth to answer questions about our organization and distribute local government information. Look over our program calendar for the year and become familiar with the local studies of the Henderson County League. Each year many festival visitors enjoy taking our history quiz.
