In May census workers will begin canvassing neighborhoods. This process will continue through July. The census is very important to all citizens. The US Constitution requires that a census be conducted every ten years. The census data help guide critical decisions for every level of government on planning for future services and needs of citizens. Please refer to Henderson CountyŐs website, www.hendersoncountync.org, for census information. There is detailed information on the workers and how to identify them. The census workers will never ask for bank account numbers or social security numbers during the census interview. Remember census workers will be asking only ten questions and are not permitted to enter your home. Please cooperate with the workers as they canvas your neighborhood.

The information on the North Carolina government website concerning Cyber Security Awareness offers information to protect children on the internet. One of the links will take parents to Multi-state Information Sharing and Analysis Center with a series of recommendations to protect your children online. Some of these tips include: keep your computer in a central location and be aware of other computers your child may be using; set guidelines for computer use with your child; be familiar with your childŐs online activities; implement parental control tools. In addition to these cautions there are several buttons across the bottom of the page exclusively for children, including one site www.ikeepsafe.org which is somewhat personalized for each state. All the childrenŐs sites provide information for children and parents.

On the North Carolina Government website a citizen will find a button, Cyber Security Awareness. The website is www.nc.gov. There is a lot of information on this site regarding cyber security for your home and work computers and for protecting your children. There are links to many national locations to gain more information and understand how to protect your network. One of the interesting links is www.us-cert.gov. All of these cyber discussions are relevant because one of the concerns af transparency in government requires management of and access to electronic information generated by federal, state and local governments. North Carolina provides renewed leadership in giving citizens access to government information and also works with other states and the federal government to protect an individualŐs online security.

Visiting the Henderson County Government website, www.hendersoncountync.org, a citizen will find an increasing amount of information. Local government websites are responding to the computer access of its citizens. The county website offers GIS information, links to ordinances, minutes of government meetings and all other information to encourage government transparency to promote access to information. Local government makes it easy to do business with the county on the web. In addition, the website invites citizen participation offering a list advisory boards that are available and seeking citizens for potential service to the county. From A to Z, Agriculture to Zoning, there are brief descriptions of each advisory board and meeting time, along with term of service and a contact. Check them out. Citizens participation is for everyone.

As we celebrate another Memorial Day it is appropriate to offer a note about veteran services in Henderson County. The Veterans Services office is located in the Henderson County Human Services Building on Spartanburg Highway. This office assists veterans and their dependents in obtaining benefits from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and the North Carolina Division of Veterans Affairs. The function of this office is to advise local veterans and their dependents on benefits under various Federal and State laws, counsel them and actively assist them to obtain those benefits. Please refer to the county website for office hours, or call 697- 4817 for more information on hours of operation.
