MARCH 2010

3/7/10

The League of Women Voters of Henderson County takes pride in tracing our origins back to the Suffragists who worked for the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment, granting women the right to vote. The true story of the struggles in the early decades of the twentieth century are represented in the movie, ‘Iron Jawed Angels.’ Following the personal challenges and setbacks of Alice Paul, a noted woman’s rights advocate, this movie is an historic report on the treatment of valiant women and men who worked to gain this basic right. On March 23, at 12:30 pm and at 7:15 pm, this movie may be viewed at Flat Rock Cinema. Tickets may be purchased from local League members or at the Visitor Center.

3/14/10

The League of Women Voters is one of the members of the Affordable Housing Coalition of Henderson County. Recently this group participated in a housing study with the other counties of the Land of Sky Regional Council. They have published a report ‘Affordable Housing Needs Assessment.’ This report is available at http://www.ashevillenc.gov/residentshousing/housing/affordable housing/default.aspx?id=1586. Or contact the Housing Assistance Corporation at 692- 4774 to request a copy. This report is available in executive summary and for our particular county. Information is reported on need and on availability of housing to various income categories. Included is also census data on population and income with an analysis on housing costs, whether mortgage or rental costs, as a portion of household income.

3/21/10

The Housing Needs and Market Study for Henderson County, November 2009, is available by calling the Housing Assistance Corporation at 692-4744. This report supplies data on various aspects of affordable housing in our county. One interesting table ranks the top 20 occupations by employment with the ability to afford Fair Market Rent by number of bedrooms. Although the title is complex, the table reveals that only four of the top twenty employment categories have hourly wages that are sufficient to afford Fair Market Rent in all categories. In addition, there is reference to public housing use and voucher use for rent support.
Please join League members at Flat Rock Cinema on March 23 at 12:30 pm or 7:15 pm to view ‘Iron Jawed Angels’. Tickets available from League members or at the Visitor Center.

3/28/10

On January 4, 2010 the Henderson County Board of Commissioners adopted the ‘Agricultural Preservation Plan for Henderson County, NC.’ This plan was developed by the county’s Agricultural Advisory Board. The plan assesses the agricultural industry in the county and reviews the challenges that agriculture faces now and into the future. In addition the report highlights the strengths and opportunities that work to the advantage of the farm community. The report concludes with several recommendations that will help recognize farmers and farms as valuable assets to be supported through political, economic and social investment. To access this report online go to www.hendersoncountync.org/agendas. On that page click on the January 4 agenda. Once on the agenda, under Discussion Items click on B. Agricultural Preservation Plan to download the pdf plan.
