Other links at www.northcarolina.gov that citizens may find informative include savewaternc.org. This site provides information to support water conservation. The information is provided as a state service because North Carolina has been suffering from its worst drought in history.
A second interesting link at the state homepage is ‘Kids Page,’ providing games and educational information for NC kids on topics from arts and museums to science and the judicial system. It is worth a look even for those who aren’t kids.
‘NC Hurricane Info’ is a third link on the state home page. This site is organized to provide weather forecasts, information on preparedness, safety, concerns after a storm and other storm and Hurricane links that include road conditions, landslide information and links to storm tracking sites.

The struggle to obtain voting rights for women is an era of American history not often studied or reported. In the month of March the League of Women Voters and the Historic Courthouse Museum are cosponsoring the movie, “Iron Jawed Angels.” This original HBO movie depicts the power and drama of the suffrage movement. The women involved in the voting rights protests were young and committed to their cause, moving the long campaign for women’s rights to a very public arena.
Please plan to attend the showings at the Museum on Tuesday, March 10, or Tuesday March 24. On each of these days the movie will be shown at 9:30 AM, 1:30 and 7:00 PM. This is the story of the courageous women who are a part of our American heritage.

March is Women’s history month. In addition to understanding the long struggle for women’s rights in our country, March is a good time to review all the progress women have made in leadership, in politics and business.
Search the internet for information about women in American and women around the world. Women and men should study about the courage and impact women have made in our country in education, industry, sports and politics.
An interesting website in National Women’s history Museum, www.nwhm.org. Another great site for information is the Library of Congress. www.loc.gov/topics/womenshistory/. Another site is www.history.com, affiliated with the History Channel. Get informed about the power of American women.

At the end of Women’s History Month, think about the power a citizen has to challenge decision makers on policy. Civic activism is only a click away in this electronic age. Before the Henderson County Board of Commissioners, or any other public body, discusses an item on their agenda, it is possible to email each board member your comments. Most recently voters from Etowah/HorseShoe took advantage of email to transmit their opinion on the Etowah/HorseShoe Area Plan to the county Planning Board. Voters were unanimous in their support for the plan and proud of their participation in the process. As local area plans are developed throughout the county participate and let the decision makers hear your opinion. Citizen voters have the power at their fingertips, only a click away.
